Well - how weird is this?????Last edited by Pad; 14th April 2018 at 11:52.
Last time I posted in this thread my PC was on it's last legs. It started with what looked like a graphics card problem, and ended up where when I booted up it would go to a black screen after the Windows logo. Spent a huge amount of time trying to fix it, including installing a new graphics card, restoring a known working OS drive image with Acronis True Image, and spending hours on the phone with the tech guys at the company who originally built it. No cigar!!! I finally concluded the machine was phucked.
So I ordered a spanking new machine which is due to arrive next Monday. In the meantime I've been struggling along with my old machine in Safe Mode. Absolutely horrible experience - janky display, no audio etc. etc.
So, I sat down at my desk this morning and fired up the machine, tapping F8 to bring up the option to start in Safe Mode. But I didn't hit F8 in time, and bingo bongo my PC decided it was working again. Everything's there, desktop icons, programs, settings, everything apparently working perfectly and not even a whiff of the graphics card "problems" that started the whole thing.
So as of Monday I'll have a brand new PC. I'm actually not too bummed about that as my current machine is over 6 years old and has taken a lot of abuse. While it's working now I don't exactly feel safe with it anymore.
Back to Potplayer
In restoring my PC to a previous known working version of the OS I lost my Potplayer installation. So I installed it again taking care this time to install the extra codecs. That seems to have resolved the problems I had in the OP. It is playing all videos just fine now.
Thanks for all the help and suggestions.
