Anyway, as a solution for you and anyone else using similar posting style i could suggest to try:
1. Using medium or thumbnail BB code instead of full image code. If you already do, then try some other imagehost. As example, Pimp&Host and Imagetwist work like charm with their 500pix width thumbnails, you don't have to worry about hosted image size. Or you may try asking owner of your favorite imagehost to implement this option too, it could save their server traffic too.
2. Using different software to generate previews. I see your images are the same resolution like video, but there are thumbnail generators that could reduce exported images to 500pix width. It could do the trick and save you from troubles with our 250kb limit.

I think it would be very nice if you enter a script on the forum that will show the weight of each photo. And the person who added the post could see that he has a big image and fix it. I think that the moderators have such a script and they do not download each picture separately. I think the moderators just see how much the picture weighs. it would be very cool if every user could see the weight of the picture he published.
